Pediatric Doctors Seek To Remove Stigma On Mental Health Issues

IN TONIGHT’S HEALTH WATCH, MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES HAVE LONG CARRYYED A STIGMA, AND THAT’S TRUE WHEN IT COMES TO CHILDREN. DR. MAX IS HERE TO TELL US THAT THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS WANTS TO MAKE A CHANGE. Reporter: THAT’S RIGHT, GUYS. STUDIES ESTIMATE THAT 1 IN EVERY 5 CHILDREN SUFFER FROM ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION AND COULD IMPACT THEIR PERFORMANCE AT SCHOOL AND COULD STAY WITH THEM TO ADULTHOOD. 18-YEAR-OLD KENNEDY CAMPBELL HAS BEEN DEALING WITH ANXIETY SINCE SHE WAS IN DAYCARE AT AGE 3. I DIDN’T TALK WITH ANYONE FOR 6 MONTHS. Reporter: HER ANXIETY LEFT HER UNABLE TO SPEAK. SHE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH SELECTIVE MUTISM. TALKING IS OVERWHELMING AND A LOT OF PEOPLE WITH THE DISORDER DON’T SPEAK OUTSIDE OF THE HOME. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN HELPFUL IF THE DOCTORS HAD DIAGNOSED HER EARLIER. Reporter: NOW, A NEW REPORT THAT PROVIDES PEDIATRICIANS WITH GUIDANCE ON HOW TO HELP CHILDREN WITH MENTAL HEALTH CHALLENGES. I SEE CHILDREN PSYCHOLOGISTS’ WITH AN INCREASE IN THE PROBLEMS. WE CAN PLAY A ROLE SO THAT MORE CHILDREN GET RECOGNIZED AND TREATED. Reporter: IT ALSO ADDRESSED TRAUMA TO CHILDREN’S MELT. THE BIG DISORDERS RIGHT NOW THAT ARE MORE PREVALENT AND PROBABLY WITHIN THE SCOPE OF A PEDIATRICIAN ARE THINGS LIKE ADHD, ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER; ANXIETY; DEPRESSION. Reporter: KENNEDY FOUNDED ARTS FOR ANXIETY ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO USE THE ARTS TO HELP WITH THEIR SYMPTOM. I FEEL VERY HAPPY THAT I CAN INSPIRE CHILDREN AND LET THEM KNOW THAT THEY ARE NOT ALONE. I FELT ALONE. Reporter: SHE RECEIVED COUNSELING AND THERAPY THAT SHE SAID HELPED HER TO OVERCOME ANXIETY AND FIND HER VOICE. FOR A LONG TIME, MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS WERE NOT THOUGHT TO AFFECT CHILDREN BUT NOW WE KNOW THAT EVERYTHING FROM BIPOLAR DISORDERS TO ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION AFFECT KIDS AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE RISING RATES OF TEEN SUICIDE. THE THING IS THERE ARE GOOD TREATMENTS FOR ALL OF THE CONDITIONS. BUT THE KEY IS GET THE KIDS INTO THE TREATMENT. YOU HAVE TO GET RID OF THE STIGMA.

  1. “Mental Health” bro? It’s called demonic oppression and possession.

  2. It's the price that stops people from getting therapy. The stigma is minimal compared to living in a state with Two mental health professionals total, those at the cost of 100$ per 30/60 minutes IF YOU'RE LUCKY AND HAVE INSURANCE.
