I’m New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot. As the City’s doctor, I have an urgent plea to New Yorkers on behalf all the health care professionals fighting the COVID-19 outbreak: Stay home. When you go out, you risk contracting or spreading coronavirus to others. Even if you are young and healthy, you can spread the virus to someone at risk of serious illness and even death. When you do go out for essentials like groceries or medicine, maintain a safe distance between yourselves and others. Try for six feet, whether it’s on a sidewalk or in a check-out line at the store. I know it’s not easy. We’re New Yorkers and we love to be out in our city. But we have to change how we live quickly if we are going to slow the spread of the virus and stand a fighting chance to save our families and our neighbors. On behalf of everyone working day and night in our hospitals and clinics, I am asking you to do your part. Stay home to save lives.
