Jillian Michaels: Don’t believe the keto diet hype


How do we really decipher the thousands of
studies that are out there on all of these diets? And the problem is what people will do to
try to sell you a false bill of goods is take one study and blow that study out as though
it’s the entire picture, when of course it isn’t. Imagine you have a massive painting but I
only showed you this tiny piece of the painting but you had no idea what the hell else was
going on over here there, there’s no way you could get an accurate read on if this
is a sad picture, a happy picture, like there’s no way you could know, correct? So when we look at keto here’s why we’re
saying, or not me, but here’s where some of the advocates are espousing benefits. Well, what are we doing with keto? We’re removing carbohydrates, anything that
elevates you got about 20 grams of carbohydrates a day that you’re ingesting, which is essentially
nothing, it’s about 80 calories worth of carbohydrates out of what could be anywhere
from a 1600 to 2500 calories a day diet so that’s nothing. And it throws your body into a state of emergency
that’s what ketosis is. And because we don’t have any glucose or
glycogen, any blood sugar or stored blood sugar, we turn to fat quickly. We produce ketones and the idea is we burn
through fat and we lose fat fast. And that is true and you would think that
would be a good thing. And in addition, people will say well I reversed
my type two diabetes. Of course your insulin level was through the
floor, you’re consuming zero carbohydrates so you have no blood sugar so your pancreas
is not releasing insulin. And this can also affect conditions like polycystic
ovarian syndrome and by virtue of that connection it can also affect fertility. Fair. Let’s give it that. But here’s what we’re not talking about,
there’s zero calorie restriction on a ketogenic diet so you have a massive amount of oxidative
stress, there’s no consideration of timing with regard to food so your autophagy process
is totally out of whack In addition to that it’s very high in animal
fats and animal proteins. So we’re seeing that diets rich in saturated
fats are poor for our telomeres oxidative stress, increased inflammation,
your nutrient sensing pathways that are related to the health of your metabolism are overrun
with constant food, heavy fats, lots of animal protein and we know it hurts your telomeres
and on and on and on. Now, what about the benefits? Is it worth it? Let me tell you, the number one way to sensitize
somebody’s body, again to insulin, is exercise. I’ve been doing this a heck of a long time,
I reversed type two diabetes, I’ve helped people get off all medications for type two
diabetes and POCOS and get pregnant after years of trying and failing through a commonsense
diet where we don’t eat too much, we eat real food and we have balanced macronutrients. So I can give you all those benefits with
none of the negative side effects of keto. And last thought on keto, we’re stripping
our body of certain fruits, which have a ton of antioxidants and polyphenols in them. So again, when we look at oxidative stress
and free radicals and how they’re aging us we need to look at antioxidant foods that
help to combat that. When you start cutting out digestive enzymes
and papaya and pineapple and mango and all the beta-carotene, which is one of the top
things to help keep your telomeres long, something like keto is detrimental on so many different
levels. And the amount of benefit is so small when
we can take a completely different path get all the benefit over here, none of the negatives
over here and all the benefits over there.

  2. I am 6'2". On January 1st, 2019, I weighed 382 pounds. I had 4XL shirts that were too small. I started by cutting out all of the obvious carb-heavy foods, breads, pasta, bagels, pancakes, soda, candy, french fries, potatoes, pastries. As I did research, my diet evolved into keto. On saturday (7/13/19), I was 275. Goal is 250 by Labor Day, 225 by Xmas and then I will re-assess. I was wearing pants that were size 50 and 52. As I lost, I have slowly bought new clothes just to get me through the time until I am ready to go smaller. On Sunday, I donated all my size 46 pants as I am now wearing 44 and 42. My shirts are 2XL. Truth is, I am RARELY hungry. I have not craved any of the carb heavy foods I have given up. Not to say I haven't had cheat moments, and I have no idea how this will work long-term as I am still in the beginning for now. But, I also feel much better. My cholesterol is down, my blood pressure is down, my triglycerides are down, my blood sugar is way down.

    My weight has been a struggle since I stopped playing football in college. Even then, I was always overweight (played OLine). I have done Weight Watchers 3 times in the past and lost weight each time, only to put it back on. In 2007, I went from ~305 down to 250 in about 8 months. In 2009, went from ~290 down to 255. In 2011, went from 335 down 250.

    Secondly, the idea that exercise is the most important thing is non-sense. I have exercised during each of my weight loss crusades. What I noticed with weight watchers was that I would have weeks where I was good with the food, but slacked off on the exercise and lose 4, 5, 6 pounds. I would also have weeks where I went to the gym 4 or 5 times, but slacked off on food and I would gain each time. The food intake is SO much more important than the exercise.

    Oh, and I have not spend any money other than food and buying weights for my basement. Have not bought books, have not subscribed to diet plans. There is more than enough free information out there to help people lose weight.

Im a keto guy and i eat alot of nuts, and seeds and low carb veggies every day. My body is in ketosis and i get plenty of anti oxidants and polyphenols thru cruciferous veggies and clove and peppermint and other nutrient dense foods like avacados, which are very low carb and im sure jillian would aggree is an excellent choice for nutrients. She needs to do her research.

  11. You say there are studies, but you are wrong. Keto has given me a new normal…when I thought I was just a weak person who couldn't lose weight or get healthy for decades, Keto came into my life. I am now "normal". My labs look great, my BP is down, GERD is gone, side benefit to being healthier is I lost 67lbs in 3 months so far with NO exercise and am 65 years old and 11 years ago I had 6x bypass graphs on my heart. My cardiologist at the VA suggested to combine keto with intermittent fasting. What a win! I now do a 20/4 IF and am feeling even better! I love the new me and I am dropping my meds down to nothing! Big Think, you and Jillian Michaels are 100% wrong on all accounts of the keto diet and IF in my opinion and experience. I've done all of those calorie restricted diets since the 70's and none of them were worth a darn. I also combined all of them with regular exercise and every time gained the weight back. Keto is neato!

  25. I’ve been researching and going over scientific studies for a few months now, regarding the Ketogenic diet. I don’t see any studies linked to this video. I do, however, see a link to your book, and to this channel. Did you read any scientific studies yourself? What I have discovered is the Keto diet is, in fact, calorie restricted. It’s not all eggs and bacon. Keto is not a high animal protein diet. And the timing of meals is a big part of Keto. People on Keto should not graze all day. In fact, your meals should keep you satisfied enough that you have no real desire to munch on a bunch of snacks. It is true that through your exercise routine, as well as the Keto diet have both helped people get off various medications. Keto also advises to exercise. I’ve seen quite a few long term successes with Keto. What I don’t hear you say, or explain, is why almost all of the participants of the “Biggest Loser” gained their weight back. That tells me that the “common sense” diet your mention, isn’t working. There are way too many temptations out there that lure even the Keto dieters to eat very unhealthy foods. The Keto diet does not create a state of emergency in a persons body. That would be Ketoacidosis. I suggest you go back and read some actual facts about the Ketogenic diet. Mind you, I have read some studies that say to not stay on the Keto diet for more than two years. I have yet to finish my studies on that subject. But at least I am reading studies, and just a bunch of hype. I really don’t need to watch all of this video. Just from what I have watched, you clearly haven’t done your homework.

  43. I highly doubt keto has only one study to back it up. Plenty of people online have posted articles and videos showing results. Keto may not work for everyone, but a lot of people need diets with strict rules and guideline. Eat reasonable and exercise doesn't work for most people, and even when it does, people go back to old habits and regain weight.

This darn diet has reversed my insulin resistance, my blood pressure is the lowest it's been in 10 years, my fatty liver is healing, inflammation in my knees have decreased, my hair and skin are looking better than they did when I was in my 20's, I've gone from obese to normal weight range, I have more energy than I have had in years. I no longer crave sweets, I eat more healthy greens and veg than I did in the past. I'm so happy that I never watched this farce of a video before I started on my keto diet or I would still be "dieting" my way through life, starving, deprived and miserable and without all of the benefits that this way of eating has done for me. Jillian, you have absolutely zero credibility with this video but I'm sure once you figure out a way to monopolize and monetize off it, you'll be changing your tune.

She is clearly wrong about almost everything in this video but I really need to comment on the specific claim that we ketonians are cutting out "certain fruits" that have antioxidants (implying we are not getting any antioxidants) Dark Chocolate that is 70% plus is is allowed on the Keto Diet. The Cacoa bean has LITERALLY been proven to be the most antioxidant rich fruit on planet earth. More than even Acai. The problem is most people eat chocolate that has been riddled with sugar + glucose/dextrose etc. Really unadulterated Dark Chocolate is some of the healthiest foods for you and this bright one missed it in her in depth analysis. Having said that, like a lot of people on the comments have pointed out, the points brought up by this lady are weak when compared with the mounting evidence for keto.   91. She makes a lot of mistakes in her analysis. She presents Keto as though you spend the entire day eating bacon. First of all, the timing issue is false. Many people on Keto combine it with intermittent fasting. This is easy on Keto because you seldom experience hunger. And that is because you don't have insulin crash. Many people on Keto go 16 to 20 hours between meals. So even if they eat till they are satisfied during those eating hours, their caloric intake is less than it previously was. Keto also has anti-oxidant food on the menu. And going from Keto to autophagy is actually easier because you don't have large quantities of proteins and carbs in your system to clean out before you can reach autophagy. In addition, your body is adapted to fat consumption, so the transition that your body makes of running on fat when you fast long enough to reach autophagy is much easier. Humans have only practiced agriculture for a very small portion of their evolutionary existence. Wheat was not a part of our diet for most of that time. And potatoes were not either. Vegetables were seasonal. People living in Northern Europe couldn't import Pineapples and papaya. So our systems evolved to deal with very different foods as their primary source than what you would consider a "balanced diet".

  98. I’ve been hearing about this, but had no idea how insane it could actually be. She will need to retract this eventually, and I’m looking forward to it. It’s the only redemption for her. Otherwise, she is obviously willing to do harm to her listening public in order to line her pockets. I think the fact that keto and carnivore lifestyles are free to adopt, it upsets these people who make a living from the chronic misery of others.
