HEALTHY HABITS that changed my life » Simple minimalist health and self care habits

Hey there, welcome back to Simple Happy Zen, it;s Vera here. And in this video I’m gonna share five of the healthy habits that changed my life. And these are very simple self care routines to help feel your best mentally, physically and emotionally. That don’t require anything fancy or expensive. Three weeks ago, I uploaded my first healthy habits video and it got an amazing response from you guys. So thank you so much. And I also got a lot of requests for a healthy habits series. So this video is part of that. And over the next coming weeks I will be uploading even more healthy habits videos on the channel. So be sure to click subscribe if you haven’t already, and you’re interested in seeing more. And I will also post a link to the playlist right here and in the description. The first healthy habit that changed my life is that I stopped buying the foods that I don’t want to be eating. And I don’t have them in my home, and I don’t tempt myself. And this sounds really simple and easy But so few people actually do this. In my home, 90% of the time, there is no candy, there are no cookies There’s no ice cream, there’s no potato chips, there’s no fast food, none of it. I am the type of person as many people are, who finds it very difficult not to indulge in snack foods and unhealthy foods if they are available. So if I have them in my home, I’m gonna eat them sometime. It’s only a matter of time. And it’s not like I would eat like an entire pack of cookies in a day. But I would spread them out over the week and then I will have eaten a bunch of cookies every day for a week. Whereas if I don’t have them in my home, I don’t miss them. I don’t think about them, and I don’t want to be eating them. So instead, I eat some fruit, or maybe some coconut yogurt with some grains in it, or something else that’s healthy, and it actually nourishes my body. So if you make sure that all you have in your home are healthy options to choose from. You’re going to make it so much easier for yourself to eat healthy and avoid unhealthy snacking. And I have actually read a very interesting study that proved that people are only capable of saying no to themselves and practicing self-restraint a number of times a day. So if there are a lot of temptations, which there already are a lot of outside of our home, it’s only a matter of time until we choose the unhealthy option. So this trick really reduces the amount of temptation we face, so we don’t have the same nose ourselves as often. So the only time we ever have potato chips or ice cream or something like that in our home, is if we know we’re going to have people over and we’re going to watch a movie or something. Then we usually go out and buy some snacks for everyone to enjoy. Or if you know you’re gonna have people over, or your kids will have a play date over, or something like that. Of course you can buy some snacks for everyone. But make sure that you don’t buy too much so that you will be faced with a lot of leftovers and also If you just don’t want to tempt yourself You could think about buying something that the kids enjoy but you don’t really like yourself. Next healthy habit that changed my life is doing deep breathing exercises. And there’s actually a lot of scientific evidence that shows that deep breathing is good for our health. They say that it releases toxins. It releases tension in the body and the mind It improves circulation. It increases muscle tone. It strengthens the immune system It improves posture, it aids with digestion. It improves the nervous system, and it’s just a great stress reliever. When we are not mindful of our breath most people, including myself, have very high and shallow breathing. So just taking a few minutes a day to be mindful of your breath and doing some deep breathing exercises really makes a big difference. Something I often notice when I start to deepen my breath is that I start to yawn. And that is actually a sign that your breath has been shallow and undeep before. So even if I only do a minute or two of conscious deep breathing I start to feel so many changes. I start to feel happier, calmer, lighter I feel more relaxed. My posture improves, my shoulders fall down. It’s such a great feeling. If you want to start doing some deep breathing exercises yourself Then there’s great videos to find on youtube to help you out. And I also have a video where I walk you through my top four breathing exercises that I like to do myself. And I will link it here for you if you want to check it out. But please know that it is an old video. So the production value is a little bit lower. But other than that, it’s a great video to help you out. Next healthy habit is something that I’ve been doing for about a year or so And I really noticed a big difference since I started doing this one. And this is actually something that’s for the health of your teeth. So the habit is that after eating or drinking something, I always do a quick water swoosh in my mouth. So I take a sip of water and I swirl it around in my mouth and I do this every time after I eat or drink something that has an impact on my teeth. Which is basically everything except for water itself. Some of the foods and drinks that have an impact on your teeth are acidic foods, like fruits or white wines or yogurt. Darker colored foods like cherries, coffee, tea, red wine, and foods that have sugar. So after I eat or drink something like this I always do a quick water swish in my mouth and I Really noticed that it does help to avoid staining them, and it also helps to protect your enamel. Which is the outer layer of your teeth. And your enamel is actually something that once it’s gone. It’s gone. It doesn’t grow back So if doing a quick water swish will help to protect that, then I’m happy to do it. A quick side note to this is that some people make it a point to always brush their teeth right after eating something. To protect their teeth, but that’s actually not a good idea. Because right after eating, your enamel always becomes a little softer. So if you brush your teeth, then it might damage it. So it’s always better to wait around 30 to 60 minutes after eating something before brushing your teeth. Next healthy habit that changed my life is walking whenever possible. And a lot of people don’t know this, but something as simple as walking has amazing health benefits. And I also just really enjoy it, and I am so grateful that I even can walk and that I have a healthy body That can walk for as long as I want to I think that’s an amazing thing. So whenever I’m faced with two options, like for example going by a car, I don’t have a car myself so in this case, it will be taking a ride with someone or walking somewhere for 20 minutes I will often choose walking. Or if I’m waiting for the bus and I know that it will arrive in ten minutes I usually just start walking to the next bus stop and catch it there. Unless I am just really busy or there’s a heavy rain or something like that I will often choose walking over anything else. A lot of people, when they think about exercise It’s really an all-or-nothing mentality. So they either work out super hard at the gym or it doesn’t count. When in fact, low intensity exercise like walking also has amazing health benefits. And since it’s easier to do, there’s also less risk of getting an injury or getting fed up with it and quitting. These are some of the health benefits of walking regularly that have been proven. It’s good for cardiovascular health and reduces risk of cardiovascular events. It’s great for our immune system. It’s good for anxiety and depression because it increases oxygen flow to the brain and boo energy. It boosts metabolism Is great for posture and helps with weight loss and toning the body. It helps lubricate the joints and decrease joint pain, and when walking outside you’re also getting some vitamin D. Depending on the weather, of course. Because I work from home and I spend so much time behind my laptop I am sitting so much of the time. And so it feels great to go outside Enjoy some fresh air, get my body moving, instead of taking public transportation or going by car and actually sitting down again. So if you have an optio,n then choosing to walk instead of anything else can really help. And even if you only go for a 10 minute walk It’s already so much better than not doing it. And if you make a habit of this, then you will spend a lot more time on your feet than you would normally do. Last healthy habit that I want to share with you today is reading for fun. Now there are a lot of health benefits associated with reading, and I am an avid reader myself. But the reason that I wanted to include this one into today’s list is that I feel like reading for fun has become something that a lot of people feel like is a waste of time. And I think that is a real shame. So on YouTube and social media reading is kind of a big deal now. But most people only talk about reading books that are self-development books, books that will make you gain knowledge, or become more successful, or earn more money, become more productive Etc. And I’m not saying that there’s no value in reading those books because of course there can be, very much. But I don’t think that they are the only books that we should read. And even the act of reading the book itself has become something that a lot of people think of as a waste of time. So now we need to listen to audio books while doing something else, like cleaning or going for a run or spending time in traffic. Because that’s more productive and we don’t need to waste time actually reading the book or even listen to summaries of books so we don’t waste our time with the little details. We just get the gist of it and move on. And I get it. A lot of people are very busy. We lead busy life and most people feel like they don’t have the time to sit down and enjoy reading a book for fun. So when they do read a book, it should be something that’s educational and informative and worth their time. Making them more productive or successful something like that. And I’m not saying that that’s bad per se, but I am saying that or reading a fiction book for fun can actually be a very healthy thing to do. And for most people, if they were to cut down their time they spend on the phone by half then they would have enough time to read. Some of the health benefits associated with reading are: improved memory, short-term as well as long-term. Reading is also mentally engaging for the brain, therefore improved cognitive functions And it can even decrease the risk of early Alzheimer’s and dementia. Reduced stress levels, improved focus, concentration and analytical thinking skills Improved empathy and the ability to see things from a perspective other than one’s own, and improved sleep while reading before going to bed. I always read for about 10 to 15 minutes each night before going to bed. it is kind of a ritual that I have, that I never skip and I did it ever since I was a kid and even if I go to bed super late after going to a party, I will still read my book first. And I also just love to get my book during the day and read for a little while, with a cup of tea. And I usually spend about 20 to 30 minutes each day on average reading. And I love to read non-fiction books to help me with my development. But I also just really enjoy your reading fiction for fun. Thanks so much for watching I’m very curious about your healthy habits. So please leave them in the comments down below Of course, check out this healthy habits playlist and subscribe to the channel, because there will be more videos coming in the next few weeks. As always, questions comments conversations down below I hope you’re all having an amazing day and I will see you all soon, byebye!

Omg laughed about having cookies at home… I am so guilty! Love cookies! Can't change that one just yet :p

  5. Great tips.
But personally I want to thank you for your efforts, today I waked up with a very bad mood; unfortunately I recently experienced hectic days that prevent me from taking care of myself, but reading your email really made my day, especially when you talked about self love and self care and why it is so important to take even a minute and care for our body, mind and spirit, because "it is not a choice; it is our responsibility".
It's really an invaluable advice that I have to remember all the time.
Wish you a happy and soothing weekend and always fruitful life, Vera <3

  6. great suggestions. I shared them with my Grandchildrmen. I want to incorporate them in my life. I have been struggling with eating snacks and I do not want to do it. lol. I do control what comes into my home. thank you

  7. I love this video!

  8. My healthy habits: watching Simple Happy Zen 😀

  9. walking or simple biking?

  10. This was amazing. I am going on a big health kick in August, and your video, inspiration and motivation has come at exactly the right time. Thank you.

  11. Would love incorporating these habits Vera…please do a detailed video on sleep routines and how to ready your body for sleep

  12. Excellent video. Easy to do advice.

  13. I remember when I was a child I used to read for fun. Becoming older I feel the obligation to read for self improvement. Thank you for that point, I Can see why as a child life seems larger and more peaceful 🧚

  14. Thank you I'm grateful for this

  15. I have been doing qigong for fifteen years, it has made me feel better physically, mentally and emotionally.

  16. Do you have a bicycle? It’s ecological a green option.

  17. I'm the type of person who would eat a pack of cookies in 15 minutes!

  18. I really love the habit of reading for fun and agree with you on that one, most of us should read more just for fun. I love reading even though I've had a very hard time concentrating since I burnt out. Since it was severe it took me close to a year to be able to read more than a few lines at a time.

Do you have any favorite book that you would like to recommend? I would love to know a few if you had the time, either through a video or just in a comment.
I am so happy to see your videos every week, they brighten my day every time.

  19. Love! Your videos are so informative & relaxing/refreshing to watch. ♥️

  20. my new healthy habit is to use waiting time for meditation, so while i am waiting for the microwave or food to steam, or waiting in line or whatever, even one minute feels great to me.

  21. My other new healthy habit is to try to do things a tiny bit slower.

  22. Interesting info about the "saying no" to yourself. I'm learning to appreciate pranayama in yoga class. With the exception of the summer heat here in southern California, I enjoy my daily dog walk…and so does my furry friend. We go early before it gets too warm.

  23. All great tips Vera. I love the way you listed the benefits for each habit too. My one healthy habit is to walk 2 miles every morning after my cup of coffee and I drink a gallon of water every day! Your first tip is the one I need to work on, keeping junk food out of my house. Thank you as always for such a great video. 🥰

  24. Great vid!! I also do the water swish Lol!! I love to read!! I'm of Irish heritage so this Irish girl loves a good story!! I love to walk if weather permits. I can't when it's so hot and humid because the heat makes me feel ill if it's too hot. Hugs!!! 🤗🤗🤗🤗💚💚💚💚

  25. Another video full of great tips! I especially like that you included reading for pleasure-it’s so good for us!

  26. Thanks for the healthy habits video! I love watching these videos to see if I can adopt some new habits. Some habits you mentioned I already do like walking, exercise, and reading, but lately the books I have been reading are for personal growth, not fun. So I will look into reading more for fun. I also do knitting, meditation, and Bible Study. I try to turn off social media after 6:00 pm and trying to produce less trash by adopting healthier eating habits. That is a work in progress. Love seeing these types of videos though. Thanks again!

  27. Great tips Vera! Interesting to hear that self help books are so popular. I tend to stick to classic literature myself when reading for fun. As I grew older found greater appreciation for classic authors. Haven't gotten into audio books yet, still prefer turning pages though! 😁😊🙌

  28. Vera, so glad you explained in detail the benefits of reading, especially reading fiction. I’m astounded by those who complain about poor cognitive ability , but then say with pride, “I don’t read.”😖

  29. All these habits i’m trying to do every day
Great video , love it 😍😍😍

  30. These are all great habits, and I fully agree with everything you say in this video! I can't understand how anyone would think that reading is a waste of time. Reading has always been a big part of my life, and it is one of the most valuable activities I engage in.

  31. One of the reasons I can't wait to move out: making sure to have not much unhealthy food in my home, haha. Even though we eat mainly healthy every weekday, there still is plenty of unhealthy food in the pantry and freezer. 😛 Makes it SO hard for me to not eat it whenever I feel hungry. 😅

Ohh and I also love to walk. And run. Basically use my feet to get somewhere. ☺️ I haven't even touched my bike in two years simply because I walk everywhere in town.

  32. I wish I could keep junk food out of my house. It was easy when I was single and lived alone, but now I am married and my husband likes to keep chips and cookies at home. I try to stay out of the cabinet where they are kept, but I still know they are there.Sometimes I am too weak to withstand the temptation !

  33. You have to put Yourself in a position to be healthy 🌱😁🌱

  34. I'm the same concerning junk food, if it's in the house, I'll eat it! So I only buy it if, as you said, we have guests or if I just want to reward myself for something 🙂

I also agree with reading for fun and, I'd add, at your own time! A couple of years ago, I started watching booktube and those "monthly wrap up" videos and I was shocked to see people reading up to 16 books per month. I had never counted how many books I was reading before because it isn't a "monthly" thing for me, but watching those videos, I started feeling very unproductive and I started trying to read more more more to reach certain numbers. I burned out pretty quickly, of course. I am back to my old habits now and I still read every day but because I enjoy it not because I have to finish a book in order to start a new one and finish my Goodreads challenge!

  35. Wonderfull and helpfull video🙌🏼 thank you Vera 😘

  36. Thank you so much for making your videos! I love them all! <3

  37. i <3 low intensity exercise!

  38. Hello Vera the best two habits that were on this video Was about the snacks/junk food which for the most part now I do not mess with anything that would bother me but I’m more mindful of what I eat I try to be.

Also reading. My favorite book that I have enjoyed has been hands-down 100 years of solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez . This book was written in 1967 The author was a news paper reporter during the Pinochet era in Argentina or Chile I believe when the government was very repressive. It goes into great detail about a family the Buendia lineage and I really connected with the characters that were the sailor and the coloniel

it’s not a bad book for most highly sensitive people and I would highly suggest it no pun intended but to me it was a novel that really was like a multi story within a novel and I really enjoyed it.

Hope you’re having a good day will see you next video😀

  39. You kinda look like Carolina vosniacki

  40. Hi Vera, do you think you will have your partner in any future videos? ❤️

  41. I definitely have a weakness for candy/chocolate and potato chips, so I don't buy them very often unless I'm treating myself/having a person over. So yes, that's definitely good advice!

And I definitely agree with reading for fun being a very good habit! I tend to read while in the train, on lunch break when I'm by myself, and before bed.

  42. Great tips Vera….so glad this is a series….I thought the notion of reading for enjoyment and reading sake versus learning was so insightful…sometimes stimulating the brain helps create neurons for creativity not memory….sooo important..Big Hugs little one…

  43. The gym scares the hell out of me . It's like going to a battle arena.Anyway ,I always love to walk. Thank you for the useful tips. By the way ,you're necklace goes very well with your tee! (i.e. t-shirt)

  44. Great list! Some of mine are making some me time, drinking water, deep breathing, light exercise, relaxing/unplugging/reading before bed, playing with my kids, and meditation. I used to prioritize light gardening since putting my hands in the earth makes me feel grounded and connected, but I haven't been able to do that enough lately.
Thank you so much Vera! Can't wait for the next video. Have a beautiful day!

  45. Excellent ideas. I love reading for fun and have become “too busy.” Looks like I need to rethink that. Also surprised at all the benefits of deep breathing and walking!! Thanks so much for the tips!!!!

  46. I've never thought about swishing water after eating to protect my teeth. that is a great habit i will be starting to do that now. Thanks for the tips!!

  47. Thanks for the video!
I'm going to try the deep breathing exercises ୧( ❛ᴗ❛ )୨

  48. Nice video! Thank you, Vera. 🌻💛💚💛💚

  49. My new healthy habbit after this vedio is deep breathing…….thanks for this informative vedio and plz make more like laila

  50. Thanks so much!

  51. Hi Vers a great video thank you for the wonderful tips one of my healthy habits is in the morning I do breathing and stretching.❤

  52. I made a commitment to stop eating snacks and cookies…I was badly addicted to
well-salted peanut butter filled pretzels ….so bad for bone health! I did not know!!! Now, in just 6 weeks, I have lost 11 pounds. I miss the pretzels and the chocolate bars, the cookies, and the cheese puffs but my face and body are looking so much better! The bloat has receded and the pounds melted away with walking and biking and eating those gorgeous fruit, nut, and yogurt bowls you highlighted. Great topic!

  53. I am a reader myself since I was a little girl. You should check out the instagram account of reese witherspoons bookclub. It's reesesbookclubxhellosunshine. There are so many beautiful pictures of books, libraries and fun quotes about reading addiction!

  54. Thank you! I really enjoyed this vide.

  55. Love your videos!! Very helpful!!! Thank you!!

  56. Amazing to know your healthy habits..your video is always short, sweet n to the point…
N here are my healthy habits…everyday I go walking to my work n return walking becoz I too love walking!
To watch happy zen n get inspired…thanks vera always inspiring me.

  57. Wonderful tips, thank you! I like the benefits listed in writing-helps to remember them. I like to meditate in bed as soon as I wake up and right before sleeping. In addition to meditation benefits, it signals the start and the end of the day for me. Your meditations are a particular favourite Vera.
I would also like to add walking barefoot on the grass for grounding.

  58. I do the water thing too 😀

  59. Like reading for fun idea…I do that😊

  60. I love these tips! I read 2-3 books at one time, to keep it varied. One is usually non-fiction, personal development, one is fiction and if I'm reading a third, it's probably an autobiography. I'm currently re-reading all the Harry Potter books as my fiction novels and am really enjoying the escapism they offer 😁

  61. I really liked these 5 suggestions. I'm keeping unhealthy food out of my house. I find it is easier that way. I'm going to practise your breathing suggestions, though. Thank you, Vera.

  62. I'm in love with your chanel! It has already improved my life. Thank you. ❤

  63. A healthy habit I've just started is having a bowl of salad every lunch time, it's so refreshing!!

  64. Another beautiful video! Love your insight, and I especially agree about reading! So many wonderful calming effects, and helps with mindfulness and presence. Lovely content and personality! ♥️

  65. I do almost all those things, always good to have an remaind 🙂 Thank you!

  66. My favorite youtube channel, i love your videos !

  67. I love you Vera 💛 Thank you for this video, & everything that you do. 😇

  68. Thank you so much for including books! I work at a literary magazine and it made my day seeing you mention fiction~

  69. ❤️👍

  70. Hi Vera walking and reading are also two of my favourite healthy things to do alongside watching your informative and relaxing videos 😀 crisps are my biggest unhealthy habit I can’t have a sandwich without them 😋 will give not buying them a try ! And the water swishing cheers ❤️

  71. Thank you Vera! I just found you today and subscribed. I love to read and have ever since I was little. I'm always on the lookout for a new book or series to read. Do you have any suggestions from the books you are enjoying now or have enjoyed in the past?

  72. New subscriber here 🙋🏻‍♀️ love the tip of walking and reading for fun, thanks for sharing!!!

  73. Good tips! Junk food out of sight, out of mind! 🌸

  74. I love the first tip and that you said that it is natural to only say no for some times of the day. So many people claim that one needs more self-discipline and don't see how many people put in as much self-discipline as they can and they don't see results altough it really tires them out.

  75. Concerning reading for fun, the biggest issue I have is that everything I want to read seems to require quite a lot of concentration, concentration I don't really have after an exhausting day. A lot of the stuff you can find on the internet is usually shorter and easier to understand. I do want to read more and spend less time online but it seems quite exhausting. It is also more expensive to buy a book/ebook/audiobook than to look for things on the internet.

Here on youtube you can also easily find stuff where you can read something while someone is talking, so you have the film material, the audio and subtitles and I find that all this together just really makes me process more of the information when I am dizzy and lets me remember more.

  76. Thanks Vera. Yes, READING a book still is natural and keeps ya grounded. The web repeats info too much. I enjoy hot tea only. Staying away from decaf coffee and beer, don't want it. Thanks.🐈

  77. simple is best! love this!

  78. Great video and information Vera. You are one of the very few that I subscribe and watch. Hope you have a great day!

  79. We share some tips in common…buy snacks or treats YOU do NOT like for your family or for guests. That way, you won’t eat any of that. Secondly, do bring into your house any junk food or temptation food. I love every cookie. Never met a cookie I didn’t love. So, I’ve stayed thin by rarely allowing myself to make cookies. When I do….I eat all of them. Knowing that is crucial. My own tip: MAKE cookies but add health food to them. Once you have a batter you can add almost anything to a cookie. Another benefit of cookies is making a dull, bad, or overly healthy (in your children’s minds) meal that your family tolerated. Let them know that after Lentil Loaf they get a cookie.

  80. Your photographs are exceptionally beautiful in this video. Thank you!!

  81. Really enjoyed this video! Agree with you 100% – reading is never a waste of time. I also have the reading before sleep habit since childhood and even when we were up late for New Year's
Eve or something, I would read for a while before turning the light off. Living in a country where most people don't read a lot, I'm a bit of a weirdo. The kids used to ask me "why do we have so many books in our house? Our friends don't."

  82. I can relate…this is my first year I have not bought girl scout cookies. I will eat the entire box of cookies in one day. They are that good!

  83. Your skin is AMAZING 💜 is there anything else that you do to it apart from healthy eating? It has an amazing glow? 🌸💗🌺😊

  84. Very informative video.

  85. I found your youtube channel just a couple of days ago and I really love your content! Keep it up 😀

  86. I love your healthy habits and I love that you included reading novels for relaxation and fun. I hadn’t thought about it, but you’re right, these days people seem to talk more about self improvement reading than escapism reading. Yes I love reading!

  87. I do slow (well not too slow) mindful walking meditation for 2.5 miles every day. It helps me tremendously. To quote Thich Nhat Hanh, "Peace Is Every Step."

  88. I love these tips and I will action all of them. To summarize her video:
    1. Stop buying foods that you don't want to eat and don't keep them in your home
    2. Deep breathing excercises
    3. Swish water in your mouth after eating or drinking anything
    4. Walk whenever possible
    5. Read for fun

  89. I like to know what books you read 😊🙏 You mentioned “the highly sensitive person” in one of your videos

  90. Do you live in the Netherlands? I visited there and loved it. Thank you for your insight. I'll be looking forward to more.

  91. 🙏💜

  92. I love your speaking. It’s easily to understand.😊

  93. I love your videos. thanks! ありがとう。

  94. Making my bed to “military standard” every morning is the first thing I do.. sheets pulled tight, pillows strategically placed and extra blankets neatly folded at the end.. discipline = freedom 🏄🏽‍♂️💦🇦🇺

  95. Ik geniet van je video’s. Ze zijn ook leerzaam en zorgt dat je gaat nadenken over de dingen die je doet.

  96. Very nice video❤👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻I love to do all those things…one I really don't but should,is Deep breathing exercises.😪 My habits include"Reading at bedtime,Walking in nature every day if I can,Making art,Singing on a karaoke app ,eating nourishing plant based meals and Rock hunting here and there"☺✌🏻🌻🦋

  97. I read voraciously. I don’t watch the crap Hollywood produces these days. I much prefer to loose myself in a book. Thanks for mentioning how good that is for your soul.

  98. I am more aware which makes me thankfull for every good moment.

  99. OMG. You are the female version of me. I practice all of these habits also. One thing about reading though, using electronic devices just before going to bed has a negative effect on restful sleep. Reading a real printed book helps one to relax and sleep better. But I totally get it. A minimalist wants one device that can hold a thousand books rather than having a library taking up all that space in the house. I have a study with many books on the shelves, but I also visit an exchange book store where you hand in the ones you read for a discount on another one that you haven't.
