Health Headlines: Vaping concerns

HALF OF NEXT WEEK AS WELL. AND PARTLY SUNNY SKIES. MIKE: JUST YESTERDAY, PRESIDENT
TRUMP ANNOUNCED PLANS PLANS TO
BAN VAPE FLAVORS A MOVE
SUPPORTED BY MANY IN THE MEDICAL
COMMUNITY. THE DECISION COMES AFTER A SIXTH
PERSON DIED FROM LUNG DISEASE
POSSIBLY LINKED TO VAPING. NEW HAMPSHIRE PUBLIC HEALTH
OFFICIALS ARE WORKING WITH THE
CDC TO INVESTIGATE REPORTED
CASES OF SEVERE LUNG ILLNESSES
IN THE STATE. WE’RE JOINED NOW BY STATE
EPIDEMIOLOGIST DR. BENJAMIN
CHAN. THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE. IF YOU COULD, GO AHEAD AND TALK
ABOUT WHAT E-CIGARETTES ARE AND
CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHAT THIS NEW
SEVERE LUNG ILLNESS IS THAT’S
POTENTIALLY CONNECTED TO THEIR
USE? DR. CHAN: E-CIGARETTES,
ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES, ARE
BATTERY-POWERED DEVICES THAT HE
DAY MIXTURE TO PRODUCE AN
AEROSOL THAT IS INHALED BY A
USER. THESE CAN CONTAIN DIFFERENT
CHEMICALS, MANY OF THEM WILL
HAVE NICOTINE, SOMETIMES THERE
IS CANNABIS PRODUCTS IN IT, IN
ADDITION TO FLAVORINGS AND OTHER
CHEMICALS OF THAT COULD POTENTIALLY BE HARMFUL TO
HEALTH. BACK AT THE BEGINNING OF AUGUST,
A NUMBER OF STATES BEGAN
REPORTING A CLUSTER OF OTHERWISE
YOUNG AND HEALTHY PATIENTS WHO
WERE HOSPITALIZED WITH SEVERE
LUNG DISEASE ASSOCIATED WITH OF A BEING. THEY REPORTED THESE TO THE CDC,
THAT INITIATED AN OUTBREAK
INVESTIGATION, WHICH CONTINUES
WITH MULTIPLE OTHER STATES
REPORTING CASES. NEW HAMPSHIRE IS PARTICIPATING
IN THE OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION,
INVESTIGATE HE REPORTS COMING
IN, BUT THERE HAS NOT BEEN A
CLEAR CAUSE IDENTIFIED FOR THESE
ILLNESSES AND IT DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE INFECTIOUS DISEASE
RELATED. THE CONCERN IS IT IS CONNECTED
TO A CHEMICAL EXPOSURE FROM THE
DEVICES, BUT THERE HAS NOT BEEN
A SINGLE CHEMICAL OR SUBSTANCE
OR DEVICE ASSOCIATED WITH ALL OF
THE CASES. MIKE: ANY CASES OF LUNG ILLNESS
IN NEW HAMPSHIRE JUST YET? DR. CHAN: WE SENT OUT A MESSAGE
A COUPLE WEEKS AGO TO HEALTH
CARE PROVIDERS, ASKING THEM TO
REPORT TO US ANY POTENTIAL
PATIENTS OR THOSE WHO HAVE VAPOR
ASSOCIATED LUNG ILLNESS, SO WE CONTINUE TO INVESTIGATE THOSE
REPORTS AS THEY COME IN, BUT WE
HAVE NOT IDENTIFIED ANY
CONFIRMED CASES OF THOSE IN NEW
HAMPSHIRE. MIKE: WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO
RECOMMEND TO FOLKS WHO MIGHT BE
USING THESE VAPING PRODUCTS? DR. CHAN: THEY ARE VERY COMMON
IN NEW HAMPSHIRE, VERY COMMON IN
THE HIGH SCHOOL AGE. SO PEOPLE NEED TO BE AWARE OF
THIS, AND PARENTS AND GUARDIANS
MUST TALK ABOUT THE RISKS WITH
THEIR CHILDREN. IT IS RECOMMENDED YOUNG ADULTS
DO NOT USE THE PRODUCTS, NOR
SHOULD PREGNANT WOMEN. ADULTS THAT DO NOT ALREADY USE
TOBACCO PRODUCTS SHOULD NOT
START USING THE ELECTRONIC
VAPING PRODUCTS, ESPECIALLY
WHILE THE INVESTIGATION
CONTINUES. ADULTS THAT USE TOBACCO PRODUCTS
AND ARE INTERESTED IN QUITTING
CAN USE COUNSELING AND FDA
APPROVED MEDICATIONS. E-CIGARETTES ARE NOT FDA
APPROVED. THE EVIDENCE IS MIXED IN TERMS
OF THEIR BENEFITS. AND PEOPLE WHO ARE USING THE
E-CIGARETTE PRODUCTS SHOULD NOT
ALTER THEM OR ADD SUBSTANCES TO
THEM OR PURCHASE THEM OFF THE
STREET. ANYBODY THAT USES THEM AND IS
CONCERNED ABOUT THEIR HEALTH OR
IS EXPERIENCING BREATHIN
